Susan Reinhardt: Mountain Heritage homecoming queen is one of a kind

The crowd went wild, roaring and cheering as the announcer called out Jan Ray’s name as a homecoming queen nominee.

Ten senior girls, all students at Mountain Heritage High School, had ridden up to the sidelines in golf carts and glittering gowns. There were the usual suspects: blue-eyed blondes in sequins and seductive gowns.

Then there was Jan Ray, who wore a modest green formal and matching shawl, escorted by her friend Isaac Styles.

Something else was different about Jan. She was the only nominee with special needs, having been born with Down syndrome.
