Celebs write memoirs to shine spotlight on disability

Two celebrity memoirs to be released will examine how big name entertainers are leading life with a disability.

"Growing Up Again: Life, Loves and Oh Yeah, Diabetes" by Mary Tyler Moore and "Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist" by Michael J. Fox sound like they will make clear how stars have to face their share of challenges.

In candid pre-release interviews, Moore described how her diabetes impacted her spontaneity and how her disability affects her as she ages. Fox raised an interesting point about Parkinson's disease when he questioned himself, "If you didn't know how sick you were, how sick would you think you were?"

The fact that Moore and Fox are openly sharing their perspectives about disability is exciting to me. By allowing readers to learn about their experiences, they are creating potential conversation starters and they are helping others with similar challenges to feel validated.
