Article- Napa High senior leads campaign to ban 'retarded'

Napa High School senior Tayler Tildsley, president of the school’s Best Buddies club, has launched a campus-wide campaign to ask students to drop the word “retarded” from their vocabularies. She says the word is outdated when used in reference to people with developmental disabilities, and is hurtful when used as an insult. “I want people to be more aware of what they say and not to be afraid of correcting people” who use the word, she said.
Laura Clark, Tildsley’s longtime buddy through the club, says her friend’s awareness campaign is “really cool.” “It teaches people not to make fun of us,” she said.
